Spinning the Avatar – 1999

Zeros Bodies+ One: the handmade and the virtual Sydney College of the Arts, Balmain Rd, Rozelle 6 to 10 August, 1998 (MVA examination exhibition)

Spinning the Avatar – 1999

A ceramics/digital installation challenges the boundaries between the body and digital technology, nature and culture, the real and the artificial. The ceramic avatar turns like a spinning top within the darkened box-like space of the gallery while digital images of the off-line persona (the artist) appear spinning from wall to wall in synchronisation with the revolving action of the avatar. A flip in perception is activated as the spinning virtual avatar occupies real space while the off-line persona occupies a digital world, challenging the distinction between bodies and new technologies.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.
We pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging.
